SODA: Service Oriented Design Activities
This paper presents a new approach towards designactivities that require collaborative work among diversedesign disciplines and autonomous organisations eachproviding specialised services. This approach is calledSODA (Service Oriented Design Activities), whichprovides a web-based design infrastructure that allowsloosely coupled design teams to collaborate on differentservices. SODA is based on the paradigm of service-oriented computing of web services and semantic web.It provides interoperability among distributed designservices and also represents their knowledge in order toaid the understanding of data and functions of designservices. Validation of SODA is performed through thedevelopment of a prototype tool and its application to areal life case study of ship design. Advantages of SODAinclude interoperability and knowledge sharing ofdesign services and the consequentially improvement ofdesigner capabilities, reduction of product developmenttime, and achievement of higher-level product quality.
