Intelligent Agents-Enabled Integrated Manufacturing Planning and Control
Intelligent agents provide a means to integrate variousmanufacturing software applications. The agents aretypically executed in a computer-based collaborativeenvironment, sometimes referred to as a multi-agentplatform. The National Institute of Standards andTechnology (NIST) has developed a prototype agent-based platform supporting the integration ofmanufacturing planning, predictive machining models, and manufacturing control. The agents within thisplatform have access to a knowledge base, amanufacturing resource database, a numerical controlprogramming system, a mathematical equation solvingsystem, and a computer-aided design system.Intelligence has been implemented within the agents inrules that are used for process planning, serviceselection, and job execution. The primary purposes fordeveloping such a platform are to support theintegration of predictive models, process planning, andshop floor machining activities and to demonstrate anintegration framework to enable the use of machiningprocess knowledge with higher-level manufacturingapplications.
