A Flexible Access Control Mechanism Supporting Large Scale Distributed Collaboration

In the large scale collaborative systems based onInternet, autonomous domains always share someresources between each other. So the access controlmechanism of shared resources need to support multiplesecurity policies, including the security policy of thedomain it belongs to and various policies for requestsfrom different cooperative domains. Because the securitypolicy is traditionally hard coded into the access controlmechanism, only one kind of access control policy can besupported at the access control mechanism. This paperprovides a method to build a flexible security mechanismthat separates the access control policy from the accesscontrol decision function by using the concept of meta-policy. The flexible security mechanism can supportmultiple security policies dynamically. The methods hasbeen implemented and verified in a CORBA based system.
