Fast H.264 Inter-Prediction Mode Decision Based on Macroblock Inner Complexity
The H.264 standard achieves much higher codingefficiency than the MPEG-4 standard,due to itsimproved inter-and intra-prediction modes at theexpense of higher computational complexity.Motionestimation is allowed to use seven kinds of block sizesto improve the rate-distortion performance.This newfeature has achieved significant coding gain comparedto coding a macroblock using fixed block size.However,motion estimation is computational intensivewith complexity increasing linearly to the number ofallowed block sizes.In order to reduce the complexity,a fast inter-prediction mode decision with macroblockInner Complexity is proposed in this paper.Theanalysis results show that the speed improvement ofour proposed algorithm over the primitive algorithm isabout 10% to 24% times but with little qualitydegradation.
