ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY AS MICROSTRUCTURAL PARAMETER FOR THE CALCULATION OF REINFORCEMENT SERVICE LIFE
Prediction of the time to reinforcement corrosion and service life duration is being asubject of increasing interest. In present communication a proposals is made on using theelectrical resistivity to calculate both the initiation and propagation periods. The mainadvantage is that resistivity is an inexpensive non destructive measurement that can be usedfor routine quality control. For the time to corrosion onset, the electrical resistivity representsthe porosity and its connectivity and therefore can be used to model transport processes. Dueto the reaction of chlorides and carbon dioxide with cement phases, the resistivity has to befactorised by a reaction factor accounting for it. Concerning the propagation period, theelectrical resistivity is an indication of the moisture content of concrete and therefore, it has acertain relationship with the corrosion cement. A model is proposed in which the resistivity isintroduced in the square root of time law.
