Comparative study of succinoylation of cellulose with or without catalysts in ionic liquids

Derivatization of cellulose in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid with succinie anhydride was investigated and the potential of novel catalysts including N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), 4-dimethylamino pyridine (DMAP) and iodine for succionylation in IL was also studied. The results showed that succinoylation of cellulose was successfully carried out in IL without any catalysts, and cellulose derivatives with low DS in the range of 0.04 to 0.52 obtained. Compared with the cellulose preparations succinylated without any catalysts, the DS of cellulose succinylated with DMAP, NBS and iodine significantly increased. NBS was found to be more effective than DMAP and iodine. The characterization of succinylated cellulose was performed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and solid-state CP/MAS 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and more evidences of succinoylation and catalysis were provided. The results also indicated that the reaction of hydroxyl groups at C-6, C-2 and C-3 positions in cellulose all occurred.
