INVESTIGATION ON SYNERGISTIC EFFECT IN ANAEROBIC CO-DIGESTION OF KITCHEN WASTE WITH CATTLE MANURE
Anaerobic batch digestion was conducted to investigate the synergistic effect in the co-digestion of kitchen waste (KW) with cattle manure (CM) at mesophilic temperature. Firstly, the digestion of KW, CM, and their mixture were carried out at two loadings of 10 and 20 g VS L-1, respectively. It was found that the co-digestion obtained more than 62% methane yield due to the synergisitc effect. Secondly, certain amounts of NaOH and NH4Cl were added in the digestion of KW to evaluate the effects of alklinity and ammonia nitrogen on the methane yield independently. The results showed that alkalinity was reponsible for the singnificant increase of 46.5% in methane yield, while ammonia decreased 37.3% of the methane yield. Thirdly, the effect of KW acidification on the digestion of CM was studied in terms of methane yield, hydrolysis rate, and structural changes of CM fiber. The results indicated that the rapid acidification of KW in the co-digestion process had a positive effect on the hydrolysis of CM; however, the increase was limited due to the low biodegradality of CM itself. The co-digestion of KW with CM could be an attractive way for the management of two separated waste streams.
