Study on concentrating of acetol from wood vinegar
With declining petroleum resources and more environmental concerns, biomass was laid a great deal of attention for bio-fuel and chemicals. Acetol, as one of the component in biomass pyrolysis liquid, is a high value added compound for medicine synthesis. If acetol can be extracted from the renewable pyrolysis liquid, much environmental and economical benefit may be obtained, while the instability of acetol makes the concentrating difficult. Herein, the concentrating of acetoi was studied. The content of acetol was concentrated from around 4% in the raw wood vinegar to above 50%, and the number of components was reduced distinctly, while the yield of acetol is still rather low. It was found that in the wood vinegar distillation process, the contents of methanol, furfurai, phenol derivatives are higher, and the contents of acetol and acetic acid are lower in the early 45% distilled fraction, and in the later 50% evaporated fraction the composition order reverses. Among the four solvents of toluene, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and hypnone, ethyl acetate has the highest solubility. Acid can be gotten rid of by neutralization of Na2CO3. Water content can be reduced and acetol content can be increased by excessive Na2CO3, while overmuch Na2CO3 makes the content of acetol lower. In the organic solution distillation process, acetol can be easily concentrated from 1% to above 40%, while a further distillation of the concentrated acetol system is rather hard. The conversion of acetol in the distillation process is possibly an important cause to the low yield ofacetol, and a brief conversion route from acetol was presented.
