Production of hydrogen-rich fuel gas from plant biomass by catalytic pyrolysis at low temperature

In order to produce rich-hydrogen fuel gas, the catalytic pyrolysis of wood-chips was carried out in a powder-particle fluidized bed (PPFD). Three kinds of wood-chips were used in the experiment to investigate the effects of controlling parameters on the pyrolysis product yields and distributions. The results showed that NiMo-Al2O3 catalyst not only promoted the decomposition of the tar and light aromatic compounds, but also significantly decreased the temperature of the secondary reaction. Meanwhile, the yields of gas products and hydrogen increased in the presence of NiMo-Al2O3 catalyst. In the absence of SiO2, even if pyrolysis temperature reaches 1173 K, the amount of hydrogen is only 13.8 g H2/kg biomass (daf). However, 91.25 vol% of rich hydrogen gas obtained at low temperature of 723K is clean combustion gas in the presences of NiMo-Al2O3 catalyst, which H2 yield is 49.73vol%, CO yield is 34.50vol%, and the yield of the low molecular weight hydrocarbons gas is 7.03vol%. The contents of H2 and CO reach 33.6 g H2/kg biomass (daf) and 326.3 g CO/kg biomass (daf), respectively. Effect of the varieties of biomass on pyrolysis product is little. Different kinds ofbiomass with similar compositions results in similar product distributions.
