Fermentative hydrogen production from sweet sorghum stalks by mixed anaerobic sludge at mesophilic temperature

This article presents the fermentative hydrogen production from sweet sorghum stalks by mixed anaerobic sludge at 36±1℃. The hydrogen production rates of raw substrate and alkali pretrcated substrate were 61.20 ml /gTVS and 120.68 ml / g.TVS respectively. The utilized rates of sugars, hemicellulose and cellulose in raw sweet sorghum stalks were 87.2 %, 15.32 % and 13.89 % respectively, and those in alkali pretreated sweet sorghum stalks were 99.13 %, 63.74 %, 45.68 % respectively. The pretreatment of raw stalks could increase the fermentative hydrogen production and the utilized rate ofsubstrates. Hydrolytic pretreatment process of lignocellulosic biomass is necessary for fermentative hydrogen production and also important for realizing the industrialized bio-energy production.
