Biodiesel production from waste chicken fat and waste frying oil
Alternative fuels is becoming increasingly important due to diminishing petroleum reserves and serious environmental consequences of petroleum-fuelled engines. Biodiesel, an oxygenated, biodegradable and environmental-friendly biofuel with low emission profile, holds good promises as ideal alternative to diesel fuel. The conversion performance of WCF and WFO to produce biodiesel was tested in this paper. Special treatment was adopted for the preparation of the feedstocks for the smoothly operation of the transesterification process. The effect of methanol/oil molar ratio, reaction temperature, catalyst amount and reaction time were investigated. The optimum conditions obtained for the transesterification process of WCF are: molar ratio of methanol to oil 9:1, amount of sodium hydroxide 1.3 wt.%, reaction temperature 50 ℃ and reaction time 2 hours, and for transesterification process of WFO are: molar ratio of methanol to oil 6:1, amount of sodium hydroxide 1.3 wt.%, reaction temperature 50 ℃, and reaction time 1.5 hours. Under these conditon, the conversions both were up to 90%. The characteristics of biodiesel samples produced under the optimum conditions were analyzed for comparson with EN14214 standards.
