Optimization of transesterification of Chinese tallow kernel oil using response surface methodology
The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the reaction conditions for preparing biodiesel with maximum conversion. The interaction of the variables affecting the biodiesel production from Chinese tallow kernel oil was also researched. Four variables such as methanol/oil molar ratio (X1), temperature(X2, ℃), catalyst concentration (X3, % (w/w)) and reaction time (X4, min) were study. The optimal conditions were determined and 3D response surface were plotted. The t-value and p-value indicated that catalyst concentration and temperature had obviously interaction effects on the response value. The optimum conditions of transesterification were X1 = 6.43:1, X2 = 65.05 ℃, X3 = 1.00% (w/w) and X4= 40.28 min. Under the above conditions, the theoretical fatty acid methyl ester content was 97.76%. The prediction of the model was confirmed with triplicate experiments under the optimal reaction conditions. The average fatty acid methyl ester content was 97.18% (n=3). We also analyzed the compositions of samples. The results showed that it mainly consisted of six fatty acid methyl esters.
