Resource Status and Biodiesel Production of Main biofuel Tree Seed Oils in Northwest of China

As a future prospective fuel, the right choice of its raw materials must be always based on technical and economical aspects. At present, the essential techniques for producing biodiesel are approaching to perfect, and reducing the biodiesel production costs is the key problem, especially the cost of feedstock. In this work, an attempt has been made to investigate the potentials of eight varieties of wood seed oils (Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxin, Melia azedarach L. and Idesia polycarpa maxim.var.vestita diels etc.) used as biodiesel feedstocks, for the values of these wood seed oils were low. The resource status of oil seeds, percentages of oil recovery and their chemical compositions were studied. The total content percentage of the fatty acids, which are consist of 18 gamma carbons, of Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge oil, Idesia polycarpa maxim.var.vestita diels oil , Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxin oil, Melia azedarach L. oil and Pistacia chinensis Bunge oil are more than 76 percent, and these fatty acids are mainly oleic acid and linoleic acid. The percentages of oil recovery of these wood seeds decreases in the order of Pistacia chinensis Bunge, Idesia polycarpa maxim.var.vestita diels oil, Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge, Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxin oil and Melia azedarach L., from 32.38 percent to 11.9 percent. The main chemical compositions of these five wood seed oils are glyceride and FFA, content of sterols is less than 1%. These results make the five wood oil seeds mentioned above are promising to be feedstocks for producing biodiesel. Further, the optimal conditions of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxin, Melia azedarach L. and Idesia polycarpa maxim.var.vestita seed oils producing biodiesels were touched. The fuel properties of biodiesels from these three seed oils were close to the No. 0 diesel fuel standard.
