Comparison of conventional, ultrasound and microwave-assisted preparation of biodiesel from Jatropha curcas L. seed oil using heterogeneous catalyst

In order to search an economical route that with a lower amount of catalyst and shorter time for preparing biodiesel in the presence of heterogeneous catalyst. Calcined magnesite, Calcined calcite and CH3COOK/artificial zeolite were employed for transesterification under conventional heating (CH), ultrasound irradiation (UI) and microwave irradiation (MI). By comparing the calciend calcite is more suitable for heterogeneous catalysis because of high natural abundance, cheap、 low toxicity、simple preparation and reusability. The leaching of CH3COOK/artificial zeolite resulted in the decrease of yield by saponification. However, calcined magnesite showed very low activity under all reaction modes. MI was the favorablest mode for increasing catalytic efficiency. Negative effect was provided for heterogeneous catalysis by UI. Fortunately, MI offered positive effect for both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Experimental results showed that microwave irradiation has effectively reduced the reaction time from 3 h to 2 h, and the amount of calcined calcite was reduced from 8 % to 5 % compared with conventional heating. The maximum FAME content and yield reached 98.96 % and 97.45 % under microwave irradiation. In summary, an efficient and cost-competitive route for biodiesel production was investigated, and the advantages are as follows: low cost Jatropha curcas L. seed oil and calcined calcite using as raw material and catalyst, lower energy consumption provided by microwave irradiation.
