PROGRESS OF FUEL ETHANOL PRODUCTION BY BIOMASS FERMENTATION
Biomass materials are abundant and diverse, which fermentation to fuel ethanol could alleviate the increasingly prominent problem of energy. This review gives the domestic and foreign development situation of the field, the production process from cellulosic materials to fuel ethanol, and the analysis and prospect of the existing problems. Also, raw material pretreatments, the microorganisms related to alcohol fermentation and several typical fermentation techniques are especially introduced. The microorganisms involve Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Pachysolen tannophilus, Pichia stipits, Candida shechatae and some bacteria, such as Zymomonas mobilis.
