Effect of Pleasant Odor and Unpleasant Odor on the Deskwork (Typing) and Recovery Period by Respiratory Metabolism

This research examined the deskwork (typing) provoked muscle tension and fatigue with respiratory metabolism, and evaluated the effect of pleasant and unpleasant odor. The subjects were ten healthy college students (male). The subjects were monitored respiratory metabolism in sitting position throughout sessions. The experiment was divided into 4 periods, the first was 4 min that is straight seating as a baseline period, and the 2nd is odor exposure period (4min). 3rd is stress with deskwork (typing) period (10min) with odor exposure. The last was resting period with straight seating odor exposure for 12 minutes. Evaluation depended RF: respiratory rates, VT: tidal volume, EE: energy expenditure, odor is Lemon, Aoba, Isovalericacid and White wine (Wwine) and Red wine (Rwine). Measuring instrument was Quarkb2 (Bertec Japan Co, LTD) In RF Aoba and Rwine odor during second was decreasing (p<0.05) vs. no odor. Aoba, Rwine and Wwine were decreasing (p<0.05) vs. no odor during last period. In VT Rwine and Wwine were increasing in 2nd period vs. no odor (p<0.05) Aoba, Wwine and Isovalericacid odor were increasing during typing period vs. no odor (p<0.05) and Aoba and Wwine odor were increasing during last period vs. no odor (p<0.05). In EE Aoba, Wwine and Isovalericacid were increasing during typing period vs. no odor (p<0.05). And Aoba was increasing during last period vs. no odor (p<0.05). In tying performance (tapping keyboard) Lemon, Aoba and Wwine were increasing vs. no odor. Wine odors showed significant change in the respiratory metabolism (VT during typing and recovery period, also in EE during typing period). The experiment is suggested pleasant odor (Wwine and Aoba) caused increased typing performance and increased a respiratory metabolism.
