STUDY ON MATERIAL PROPERTY OF YOUNG CONCRETE AND CONTROL OF CRACKS IN CONCRETE SLABS
Cracking of concrete is a complex process closely related to material properties at earlyage, and cracks may reduce the service life of concrete structures. To prevent and control theunexpected cracks, the technique of control joints set in concrete slabs was studied in thisproject. Firstly, experimental study on the material properties of two kinds of concrete withdifferent mix proportions was performed, focusing on free shrinkage, split tensile strength, elastic modulus, and stress-strain relationship of concrete under uniaxial compression. Theconcrete ages were from two days to half a year. As a result, the time-dependent laws of thesematerial properties were derived by means of aggressive analysis. Moreover, based on theresults of material properties, experimental study and numerical simulation on control jointsin concrete slabs were conducted. Sixteen reinforced concrete slabs with different controljoints and other two without joints were cast in pre-formed steel moulds. The tests lasted for ahalf year. Initiation and development of cracks in slabs were recoded and then numericallysimulated. It was shown that cracks in young concrete slabs could be effectively controlled bymeans of properly setting the control joints.
