A Comprehensive Review of Workplace Incivility Research

The study of workplace incivility is new to the managerial and organizational literature. While much has been written about violence in the workplace, often the small and subtle egregious acts, the little incivilities, take the large toll. Links between the work environment and indicators of employee loyalty, commitment, and productivity show this is not a fluff. This paper will make a comprehensive review of previous research on workplace incivility, including its definition, profiles of the instigator and the target of workplace incivility, spiraling exchange of workplace incivility, some background on incivility at work, the costs of organizations, what employers can do to reduce rudeness at work, development of workplace incivility scale, and future research.
