Transformation Dilemma of Chinese State-owned Enterprises under Organizational Uncertainty
Institutional transformation is a vital task for Chinese state-owned enterprises to be confronted with, and causes a dilemma for the top managers to face as well. A successful transformation can make a break-through in institational limitations on enterprises to improve their performance. However, a failed transformation can have a short-term or long-term adverse effect on both enterprises and their reformers. This paper first sum-marizes the social context of the transformation, and explains its process based on organization change theory. Then the key factors influencing the organizational change in three enterprises are summarized from the perspectives of interest adjustment, leadership style and political behavior etc. Finally, it is pointed out that the top managers are the driving forces of organizational change under uncertain environment, and suggestion on strategies and its context for a successful transformation is raised up. On the one hand, this study can enrich the organizational change theory under organizational uncertainty. On the other hand, it can provide valuable suggestion for the enterprises to make some institutional innovation under economic transition.
