CORROSION MONITORING IN REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES

Reinforced concrete structures are used to a very large extent in the modem world. The durable combination of steel and concrete provides safety and serviceability. Corrosion isthe main cause of damage to concrete structures. For owners of structures reinforcementcorrosion is difficult to manage due to the lack of objective tools that give information on theactual corrosion state of the embedded steel. With such information they could take remedialactions well before damage appears and their spending on repairs would be reduced. On manystructures monitoring would allow a more cost effective management of reinforcementcorrosion in concrete. This paper presents a monitoring system based on macro-cell principle, which may be installed in both existing and new concrete structures. The system has been tested with satisfactory results in laboratory and proves to be robustand reliable during ten years experience on-site. The future strategy includes integration ofcorrosion monitoring with software for interpretation of signals in terms of risk and timenecessary for repair. Thus the corrosion monitoring will be an important supplement to thetraditional inspection of concrete when the objective is to use a preventive maintenancestrategy.
