AUTOCLAM PERMEABILITY SYSTEM TO ASSESS THE PROTECTION PROVIDED BY SURFACE TREATMENTS

It is important to test the absorption characteristics of concrete before and after theapplication of surface treatment in order to understand the improvement caused by them.Although cores may be tested in laboratories to determine the benefits of surface treatments,in situ testing is preferable to avoid any damage to the structure. Therefore,an investigationwas carried out in order to ascertain if the Autoclam permeability apparatus could be used forthis purpose. The investigation consisted of testing treated (with pore liners) and untreated (control)concretes. The effects of surface treatments for a range of concretes and test conditions onimproving both the chloride ingress and the time to initiation of corrosion were assessed. These data were compared with the sorptivity values obtained with the Autoclam. The water absorption test using the Autoclam showed that the test duration has to beincreased to 1 hour for pore liner treated concrete. As the flow rate of water was very slow, the test area had to be increased from 50 mm to 100 mm diameter for surface treatedconcretes. It was found that the reduction in water absorption due to the application of surfacetreatments could be measured with the modified Autoclam sorptivity test and the sorptivityvalues correlated well with the chloride ingress.
