DIAGNOSIS OF CRACKS IN REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB BY USING AE TECHNIQUE
Civil engineers need to understand the potential of crack propagation as well ascrack width and depth when they diagnose the damage of reinforced concrete (RC) slabs.Acoustic emission (AE) method was one of the good methods to distinguish thecharacteristics of crack; e.g. the tensile or the shear mode. This paper summarizes the researchon diagnosis of the crack in RC slabs by using AE method,which cannot be obtained throughvisual observation. Sensors were placed on the bottom surface of RC slab,which had beenused as a member of highway in Tokyo for 23 years. AE signals generated by a car weightpassing on the RC slab were measured through these sensors. Based on the test result,thispaper concluded that the AE method was a good method to identify the activity of crackpropagation on the bottom surface of the RC slab.
