CRYO-DAMAGE OF CEMENTITIOUS MATERIALS SUBJECT TO DIFFERENT FREEZING RATES

The influence of freezing rate on the cryo-damage of cementitious materials isinvestigated experimentally in this paper. Saturated, dried and air-entrained mortar specimensare prepared and tested for their basic mechanical properties and pore distributions viamercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Then, the specimens are subject to laboratory freeze-thaw cycles under three freezing rates and moisture exchange environment is avoidedbetween environment and specimens. The measurement is effectuated for freezing expansion, residual deformation of the specimens in each freeze-thaw cycle. With cryo-damagerepresented by the residual expansion of material after each cycle,it is observed that highfreezing rate does augment freezing expansion of material while the cryo-damage is moreimportant for low freezing rate.
