LIFE-CYCLE SAFETY AND COST ANALYSIS OF RC BRIDGE
Due to concrete durability deficiency,RC bridges as well as other civil engineeringstructures are deteriorate and may reach a minimum acceptable level of performance aftersome time. It is the only way out to make decision on the life-cycle,taking into considerationsafety, economy, and sustainability requirements. The relationships among the target safetylevel, the minimization of life-cycle cost, and the optimal extension of service life for RCbridges are analyzed in this paper. A methodology of multi-objective decision-making isproposed basing on life-cycle cost analysis which consists of the calculation of not only theinitial design and construction costs, but also includes the costs due to operation, inspection, maintenance, repair, and damage/failure consequences during a specified lifetime. Themethod and procedure of life-cycle safety and cost analysis are illustrated with an example ofRC bridge for producing a cost-effective design solution that balances the safety, the initialcost and the lifetime cost in the preferred manner.
