NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION ON THE EFFECT OF RAIN FOR NEUTRALIZATION PROCESS OF CONCRETE
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of permeability variations nearthe upper surface of concrete structures, because liquid movement in this region is importantin discussing the neutralization process. The vertical distribution of permeability in a concretesample was measured in this region of high permeability. There is a clear non-uniformvertical distribution of permeability down to a depth of 60 mm. Based on the proposedanalytical model to predict the neutralization process taking into account the influence of acidrain,a simulation is presented with the measured permeability as a parameter. The resultsshow that acid-rain induced neutralization is accelerated where permeability is higher. Thus, itcan be concluded that the influence of acid rain on the neutralization process may differdepending on position within a concrete structure. Predictions based on an averagepermeability value without effect of acid rain may underestimate the rate of neutralization insome areas. Therefore, when durability of a concrete structure is estimated, water permea-bility distribution and effect of acid rain must be taken into account simultaneously.
