FABRICATION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF MNO2 REFERENCE ELECTRODE FOR MONITORING CORROSION IN CONCRETE STRUCTURES
A reliable embeddable reference electrode is an important prerequisite formonitoring corrosion of concrete structures in the long term. In this paper,a new typemaganese dioxide electrode was fabricated by depositing MnO2 on a carbon substrate in 0.25mol/L Mn(CH3COO)2 solution. Characteristics of electrodeposited manganese dioxide (EMD)reference electrodes were investigated by examining open-circuit potential, microstructure, uniformity of potential and polarization behaviour in synthetic concrete pore solutions. Results indicate that there exists an optimal applied polarization potential for fabricatingEMD reference electrodes. EMD reference electrodes showed good stability, desirablepolarization behaviour and better reversibility in synthetic concrete pore solutions at roomtemperature. Further analysis proved that the MnO2/MnOOH ratio of the electrodes plays acritical role on the stability and uniformity of the potential of reference electrodes.
