THE EFFECTS OF CORRODED STIRRUPS ON SHEAR RESISTANCE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS

Although many studies have been carded out to study the effects of corrosion onreinforced concrete structures, only few literatures focused on shear resistance of corrodedreinforced concrete structure members. There is still lack of comprehensive knowledge ofshear resistance of corroded reinforced concrete structure members. In this paper, the effectsof corroded stirrups on the shear resistance of reinforced concrete beams are analyzed anddiscussed based on the experimental data available. It is generally found that at the earlystages of stirrup corrosion the shear strength initially increases. The loss in shear strengthcommences after the corrosion of the stirrups approximately exceeds a 10% threshold level. An empirical equation is proposed to take into account the effect of corrosion of the stirrupson the resulting shear strength of reinforced concrete beams, which is in good agreement withthe experimental data and will enable designers to take into account the effects of corrodedstirrups.
