RESEARCH ON CORROSION CHARACTERISTICS AND CORROSION CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF STEEL BAR IN CONCRETE

The corrosion characteristics of steel bar in concrete are decided by the corrosioncurrent distribution along the circumference of the steel bar. It is a general assumption thatchlorides lead to a localized corrosion on the rebar. However, the destruction of a largenumber of specimens indicated that before corrosion cracking, the chloride-induced corrosionmainly distributes on the surface of the steel bar facing the concrete cover. This paperexamined the corrosion mechanism from fundamental electrochemical principles andexperimental verification. It was illustrated that the macrocell corrosion must co-exist withmicrocell corrosion, both macrocell and microcell corrosion mechanisms could playsignificant roles, and the total corrosion could be underestimated if each of two is overlooked. The corrosion characteristics of steel bar in concrete depends on active or passive state of therebar surfaces facing and opposite to the concrete cover as well as macroceil corrosion currentI8 between them. The existence of I8 not only accelerates the corrosion rate of the half steelbar facing the concrete cover, but also forms cathode protect from the corrosion of the halfsteel bar opposite to the concrete cover.
