COMPARISON OF DURABLE GFRP PANEL AND CONCRETE PANEL FOR LONG TERM

To replace the precast concrete panel,a pultruded cellular GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) panel was loaded to failure and tested in doors under sustained load forthree years to investigate its creep. The panel is designed for pedestrian bridges and buildingfloors under a 4 kN/m2 live load. Its initial stiffness and ultimate strength were acquired bythe static loading test. Then,a panel with a 2.8 m long span bolted on supports were loaded tothe maximum design load and held during the first year. The creep of GFRP panel isinvestigated. The deflection did not rise obviously after 200 days. After one year the load wasreduced to the normal service load level. In the next two years the deflection kept nearlyconstant. The experimental results are explained in this paper. It is shown that the deformationof GFRP panel developed significantly in the first 125 days, and the maximal deflection inlong term is 124.2% of the instant deflection under the maximum design loads. Based on thetest results, the comparison between concrete panel and GFRP panel is conducted. It is shownthat FRP panel is much better than concrete panel.
