RESEARCH ON MECHANISM OF SULFATE ATTACK ON CONCRETE BY TG-DSC METHOD
Sulfate attack on concrete is quite a complicated process involving a series ofchemical reactions and physical changes, the mechanism of sulfate attack on concrete is veryimportant for durable design of concrete structure under sulfate attack condition. In this paper, the corrosive components and their content in concrete were measured by the thermal gravityanalysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method, the concrete specimenswere casted by four kinds of mixture and chronical immersed in sulfate solution of threedifferent concentrations, the test samples were made at different attack times of 1 month,3months,6 months,9 months and 12 months respectively. The TG-DSC curves are illustratedto introduce how to analyze the changes of the components. The corrosive process can bedivided into the latency stage and the ettringite forming stage, the continuous hydration ofcement and the sulfate diffusion into concrete take place in the first stage, the ettringite formsafter the gypsum in the second stage. The attack depth into concrete increases with theincrease of water to cement ratio and concentration of solutions.
