THE FEATURE OF STEEL BAR FRACTURING IN ASR-AFFECTED BRIDGE PIER AND ITS MECHANISMS

The brittle fracture of steel bars caused by an excessive expansion of concrete dueto alkali-silica reaction (ASR) has recently been reported in a large number of bridge piers inJapan. At present,the development of maintenance and rehabilitation method for such ASR-affected bridge piers has been a matter of great concern to civil engineers. The authors havebeen carrying out the survey on steel bar fracturing in ASR-affected bridge piers. In the firstpart of the paper,the actual condition of steel bar fracturing in bridge piers was introduced. Inthe second part of the paper,the mechanisms of steel bar fracturing due to ASR werediscussed based on the change in mechanical properties of steel bar at work of bending andthe propagation procedures of cracking across the cross sectionof steel bar caused by a tensileforce induced by both the residual stress at work of bending and the continuous ASRexpansion of concrete.
