MOISTURE CONDITIONS NEAR CONCRETE SURFACE: MODELLING AND APPROXIMATION

Most durability problems of concrete structures are related to moisture (water)transfer. A complete model of moisture transport consists of differential equations, and thecorresponding boundary conditions and initial conditions. The currently widely-usedboundary conditions are more or less empirical and lack of scientific support. In the presentpaper, the moisture transport processes in the concrete and between environment and concretesurface are investigated and the relevant equations are established. Then, experiments aredesigned and performed to study the moisture distribution and evolution at the near-surfacezones under isothermal drying, isothermal wetting as well as heating drying conditions. Theexperimental results are interpreted through a one-dimensional coupled concrete-environment modelling of moisture transport with special attention is given to the choice andinfluence of surface factor in the modelling. Based on the available experimental results andmodelling, the appropriate moisture boundary conditions are discussed in the end.
