TENSILE BEHAVIOR OF HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE AT EARLY AGES

Early-age material properties of concrete, especially tensile behavior areindispensable parameters to predict and model risks of pre-mature cracking, which seriouslydeteriorates durability of concrete elements and structures, but have hardly received muchattention. With development and application of high performance/strength concrete(HPC/HSC),early-age cracking-induced durability issues become more and more severe. As abasic research work, direct tensile behavior of HPC with different mix proportions at earlyages were preliminarily investigated with self-designed testing rig in this paper. Theconclusions of the present study can be drawn as follows: a) Testing rig developed in thismaterial effectively evaluated direct tensile behaviors of hardening HPC,b) Tensile straincapacity of HPC was very high in the period of hardening, which rapidly decreased with ageand minimum value was reached later (about 12 hours) and c) Tensile strength and tensileelastic modulus of HPC rapidly developed at early ages, and furthermore, the rate ofdevelopment of tensile elastic modulus is much higher than that of tensile strength. Directtensile strength was about 0.96 times of splitting tensile strength.
