SELF-HEALING MECHANISM OF A NOVEL CEMENTITIOUS COMPOSITE USING MICROCAPSULES
In this study,a novel self-healing cementitious composite with microcapsule hasbeen developed. An adhesive of epoxy E-51 was modified by a dilutent chemical of 1-butylglycidyl ether (BGE) for viscous adjustment and adhesion property. Urea formordihyde resinwas used to encapsulate the epoxy material, which was applied to design a new concretestructure exhibiting a self healing function. An etched sample reveals that the microcapsulesremain unbroken after typical concrete processings and a period of storage, demonstrating thatthis technology is feasible to make self-healing concrete materials, particularly in term ofengineering application. The self-healing effectiveness of the composite can be analysed by achange of the bending strength and the mechanical data obtained show a considerablerecovery for the composites designed. The fracture surface subjected to bending damage ofcomposite are studied by SEM technique, indicating that the failure mechanisms include themicrocapsules broken straightly, the microcapsules pulled out,a typical brittle fracture for thecomposite matrix and a good interface formed between the microcapsule and the cementitiousmaterial.
