PENETRATION OF CHLORIDE INTO CRACKED CONCRETE

Surface impregnation of reinforced concrete structures is a well establishedtechnology by now. In many countries guidelines and standards on the application of silanebased compounds for the protection of concrete structures in aggressive environment exist.Capillary suction is suppressed by surface impregnation with silane. As a result ingress ofliquid water and nocuous ions dissolved in water is prevented. In practice concrete structuresare usually cracked. Cracks may serve as preferential paths for ingress of water and chloridedissolved in water. The influence of cracks on the efficiency of water repellent surfaceimpregnation has been studied and results will be briefly presented in this contribution. Basedon these results recommendations for applications in practice can be formulated. If cracksoccur after surface impregnation,it may be necessary to repeat the protective measure.Mechanically induced damage (micro-cracks) usually reduces durability of concrete. This isone of the synergetic influences of combined mechanical and environmental loads ondurability and service life. The reduction of service life of concrete structures can be avoided, however,by surface impregnation. In addition it will be shown that surface impregnationdelays initiation of corrosion in aggressive environment significantly. If chloridecontaminated concrete is surface impregnated with silane, the rate of corrosion is reduced. This effect also leads to an extension of service life of reinforced concrete structures inaggressive environment.
