EU Antidumping Investigations against China: Facts and Determinants
At present, China is European Unions second largest trading partner and the biggest source of EU imports. However, the rapid growth of Chinas export has a great impact on the EU market. The trade frictions between EU and China emerge more frequently than before. China has become the major target of the EU antidumping investigation in recent years. In this paper, we focus on the facts and determinants of the EU antidumping investigations against China. We elucidate the modulation of EU antidumping policy and rule, and present some facts and figures of those investigations. Then we make an empirical research on the factors influencing the probability of the EU antidumping filings against China during the period of 1998-2006 by using the binomial Probit model. Our analysis shows that EU increases the ratio of the antidumping investigations against Chinas product to total after Chinas accession to the WTO; the chemicals and metals industries are exposed to initiate antidumping investigations than other industries; the EU industries easily file an antidumping petition against Chinas products which have been the targets in prior investigations. We point out that the Chinese government should control the export to the European Union, upgrade industry structure constantly, improve international competitiveness and lobby the EU member countries in the antidumping cases.
