China: Heading towards a Leading Economy and an Internationalised Currency?
Chinas impact on the world economy has been frequently examined, tn view of its outstanding economic power and vigorous performance it might make sense to look as well into the question to what extent China fulfils essential requirements, which are generally associated with a leading economy. The first chapter looks into more general issues which go together with a leading economy such as Chinas economic dynamics and system elements. The second chapter focuses on currency issues against the backdrop of the present debates about a more internationalised Renminbi. At the beginning, developments will be examined, which might contribute to an increasing demand for the Renminbi as an international currency. This will be followed by a catalogue of costs and benefits of providing an international currency. Finally, the question will be dealt with whether a regionalization of the Renminbi as considered by a few economists as a first step towards its internationalisation could be considered a second best solution and whether it would be less risky than moving directly towards the full convertibility of the Yuan. In the conclusion, the third chapter,Chinas currency issues will be looked at against the backdrop of present discussions of the international financial system
