Calculation of Transmission Characteristics in Microstrip and Coplanar Lines Using Copper-Clad Glass Cloth Dielectric Laminate Substrates

For 50-ohm microstrip and coplanar linesconstructed on a copper-clad ceramic/PTFE glass clothlaminate substrate AR-1000,the propagation constants γ=α+jβ,where α is attenuation constant and β is phase constant,arecalculated with the 3-dimensional electromagnetic simulatorHFSS and 2.5-dimensional simulator Sonnet em in thefrequency range 1 to 20 GHz.Particularly,the attenuationconstant due to the conductor loss αc and one due to thedielectric loss αd are evaluated separately from calculations.The results calculated for accurate measured values of relativepermittivity in the normal and tangential directions for theAR1000 substrate and of surface and interface resistances ofcopper foils plated on the both sides,are compared with onesfor the nominal values presented by a manufacturer.
