Design and Analysis of an Overmoded Slow Wave Structure for High Power Terahertz BWO

New micromachining techniques now provide thetechnology to fabricate slow wave structure (SWS) which arecommonly used in the backward wave oscillators (BWOs) withdimensions suitable for operation in the terahertz region.In thispaper,results of theoretical and numerical simulation studies ofa large cross section,cylindrical SWS with the rectangluarlycorrugated inner wall are presented.The dispersion relation ofthe overmoded SWS with various dimensional parameters isanalyzed,and the distribution of the electrical fields in thespecific SWS is also determined.It is found that the steadystate,single-mode operation in this overmoded situation couldbe realized by the performance of surface wave near the uppercutoff point.Under the condition of 550kV beam voltage and1kA beam current,2.5D particle-in-cell simulation predictedthat the proposed SWS could be employed in the BWO systemto deliver an output power above 40 MW at the frequency ofabout 0.144THz with perfect time plot and free spectrumcharacteristic.
