Modeling and Design of a Novel Backward-Wave CPW-Antenna Based on Negative Refractive Index
A new field of physics has appeared withthe emergence of materials known as Left handedmaterials (LHM) or metamaterials.Thesematerials show very particular characteristics.Theirindex of refraction has a negative value, which resultsin the reversal of Snells law.Whereas in traditionalmaterials, the Poynting vector S always forms aright-handed triplet with E and H (S=E∧H).In theleft handed media, the Poynting vector S and thewave vector K are in opposite directions. Thus, thewave moves in the direction opposite to the directionof the energy flow: phase speed and group speed areanti-parallel.Therefore,a left-handed media isartificial and does not exist in nature.Indeed, whenthese materials are inserted into a guided wave device, one obtains the backward wave effect. The goal ofthis work is to study more in details this physicalphenomenon. To undertake this study, this paperpresents also the design of a 10 GHz beam-scanningCPW-Antenna fabricated on metamateriai support.
