Effects of Transmitter Phase Noise on Millimeter Wave LFMCW Radar Performance

The transmitter phase noise has important effects on the performance of millimeter wave LFMCW radar.A beat signal spectrum is analyzed with consideration of transmitter phase noise afterInthe paper. Returns of a large RCS target will leak into the adjacent range bins and can even swamp smaller targets around the large RCS target. It is shown that a millimeter wave LMCW radar hasA stronger ability to detect moving-target signals superimposed on clutter signals if its transmitter phase noise level is lower.
