SERVICE LIFE PREDICTION OF UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES: A CASE STUDY ON THE TRANSPORT HUB OF TIANJIN STATION
For underground structures such as subways and tunnels, durability design is ofspecial importance since detailed inspection after construction and during service,if notimpossible,is very difficult to perform. The ongoing large-scale project of Tianjin Stationincludes a central transport hub complex, situated in a soil rich in chloride and sulphate. Theservice life of whole structure is expected to be 100 years. This paper aims to quantify thedurability performance of the concrete structures and evaluate the relevant service lives. To thisend,a preliminary analysis is carried out on the whole transport hub to identify the durability-related failure modes. On the basis of the available geotechnical data and environmentalconditions, the service life under each durability failure mode is then calculated throughestablished models, including reinforcement corrosion by chloride penetration, reinforcementcorrosion induced by concrete carbonation, frost attack and sulphate reaction. From theobtained results, the reinforcement corrosion by chloride penetration from underground water isidentified as the active failure mode. Further suggestions to maintain the expected design lifeare provided in the end.
