The Treatment of Black Liquor Using Up-flow Multi-stage Anaerobic Reactor

The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of an up-flow multi-stage anaerobic reactor treating diluted black liquor from a Kraft pulp mill. The reactors performance was evaluated from the standpoint of COD,pH,volatile acid concentration, and microbiologic examinations of the sludge. The highest COD removal efficiency was 65%,when the OLR was 5.2(kg COD/m3·day)with the HRT of 14 h.The VFA of the effluent was high during the reactor start-up and then was below 5mmol/l.The reduction of the HRT from 28 to 14 h reduced the COD removal efficiency from 61% to 39%.The internal circulation increased the average COD removal efficiency from 40% to 60%.
