Factors Influencing the Sonophoto-degradation of 2, 4-Dichlorophenol

Chlorophenols have been recognized as environmental pollutants since the 1960s because of their toxicity to humans and their tendency to bioaccumulate in the food chain. They are known to be widespread in industrial wastes(e.g.pulp and paper mills, petrochemical refineries and coke plants)and are used in many industrial processes such as the manufacture of plastics, dyes and pesticides.Different methods of treatment to chlorophenols have been reported, such as ultrasonic degradation, photocatalytic degradation,photo-Fenton degradation, photoelectrocatalytic degradation, and advanced oxidation process with UV/H2O2(AOP).One of the most promising technologies is the utilization of ultrasonic enhancing photocatalytic degradation of chlorophenols. The following factors influencing the sonophoto-degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol(2,4-DCP),such as TiO2 concentration,pH,temperature and ultrasonic power, were studied in this paper. The results indicate that the optimum TiO2 concentration in the solution is only 0.01g/L.High ultrasonic power in the solution is good for sonophoto-degradation of 2,4-DCP.The extents of the reaction in acidic and alkaline conditions are 94.6% and 97.3% respectively, which are more extensive than that in neutral solutions.Temperature has a limited effect on the sonophotocatalytic reaction at temperatures below 60℃.However,when the temperature in the solution is raised to 60 ℃,the rate of reaction decreases rapidly.
