Study on Photocatalytic Degradation of Guaiacol in Aqueous Suspension of TiO2

Under several different degradation conditions, the researches were made on the kinetic model and mechanism of the guaiacol degradation,in which guaiacol(G-M),a kind of iignin compound, was used as photocatalytic degradation object, and self-prepared nanometer TiO2 as activated photocatalyst. The experimental results proved that the photocatalytic degradation in solution consisted of two processes: adsorption and degradation. The adsorption equilibrium constants Ka(equal to Ka = 5.931×10-2)and max adsorption amount of G-M on TiO2 surface(Qmax=7.225mg.g-1)were obtained through the determination of the surface adsorption performance of G-M on the surface of TiO2.Accordingly,the degradation kinetic equation 1/r = 1.744/C+0.1034 was formulated by the discussion of kinetic equation derived from the application of L-H equation, and kinetic order intervened between zero and first.By identification analysis of some intermediates formed in the G-M degradation process with color shade measures of functional groups,it could be estimated that ring-opening and decarboxylation reactions might occur in this process, that some intermediates in the degradation process could be quickly decomposited and degraded, that there was no occurrence of secondary pollution in aqueous system, and that,ultimately,G-M in aqueous suspension system could be completely mineralized in the presence of TiO2 and UV illustration in the degradation process.
