Study on Treatment of Papermaking Wastewater with Cationic Polymer Flocculant

Cationic polyquaternary ammonium acrylamide graft copolymer(PAQD)was prepared from acrylamide and poly-2-hydroxylpropyldiethyl ammonium chloride and used as flocculant in the treatment of papermaking wastewater for removing CODCr and suspended substances and for decoloring. For polymerization, the factors including dosage of initiator, concentration of monomer,pH value and polymerization temperature on the quality of the cationic PAQD was investigated. Also discussed were the influences of the flocculant dosage, its molecular weight and pH on the sedimentation effect of floes. The experimental results showed that this cationic flocculant had satisfactory results in treating papermaking wastewater. In comparison with conventional flocculants such as APAM(anionic polyacrylamide)and NPAM(nonionic polyacrylamide),the performance of PAQD was the best. The PAQD had the characteristics of less dosage, higher sedimentation rate of floes, lower water content of filter cake, clearer supernatant and lower remains of pollutants in papermaking wastewater.
