Study on the Mechanism of Using Coniferin in Treatment of Paper Mill Effluent

In order to understand the mechanism and to find suitable method of the treatment of paper mill effluent with eoniferin,the characteristics of products from laccase-catalyzed polymerization of coniferin and water-soluble lignin isolated from effluent were determined by 13C-NMR spectroscopy,FT-IR,and GPC.The condensation mechanism of coniferin with soluble lignin and insoluble lignin in the wastewater was also investigated.The results showed that coniferin could polymerize with the lignin in effluent into macromolecules and reduce the content of lignin and chroma of the wastewater significantly.The results of FT-IR and 13C-NMR analysis showed that the structural units of dehydrogenation polymer(DHP)connected each other by β-O-4,β-β and β-5 linkages.Furthermore,DHP associated with carbohydrate by benzyl ether linkages,ester bonds and a few ketal linkages.Moreover,there were also many coniferyl alcohol and coniferyl aldehyde subunits.As a result,the concentration of iignin in the effluent decreased from 0.73g/L to 0.078g/L.The chroma was reduced from 500 to 18.These results indicate that it is powerful method to remove lignin and related chroma by polymerization ofconiferin and lignin in effluent.
