Application of Life Cycle Assessment to Chinese Pulp and Paper Industry
In this paper, the Life Cycle Assessment(LCA)methodology was applied to coated white board made in China in order to analyze the resource consumption and environmental emissions at the different stages of the papers life cycle and to compare the potential impacts of different waste paper ratio on environment. The results of inventory analysis showed that the energy consumption of coated white board in China was 1.063 ton coal(the heat value of the coal is 29308kJ/kg)per ton, which was 28-36% higher than that in the developed countries. The water consumption of coated white board in China was 113m3/t,which was higher than that in the developed countries too.The results also indicated that water pollutants mainly came from the pulping, bleaching and papermaking processes. In the above processes, chemical oxygen demand(COD)emission in the coated white board production was 102.5kg/t,and solid suspension (SS)63.8kg/t,biochemical oxygen demand(BOD)34.9kg/t.The air pollutants came mainly from heat energy production and electric energy production and pulping process, and gas emissions in the coated white board production was CO2 2130kg/t,SO232.8kg/t,NOx 30.81 kg/t.The results of impact assessment showed that the most important environmental impact related to the papermaking industry was acidification, the second was global warming. Moreover, more attention should be paid to the eutrophication.Based on the inventory analysis and impact assessment results, the conclusion could also be drawn that the replacement of bleached kraft softwood pulp by waste paper in the coated white board production process appeared to be environmentally friendly.
