Fiber Lumen Loading of Fe3O4 for Magnetic Paper
In this study,a magnetic paper was prepared by loading magnetic particles(Fe3O4)into the fiber lumen.Fe3O4 particles were introduced into the lumen of fibers while leaving the exterior surface free of filler particles. The Fe3O4 particles in the fiber lumen were protected by fibers wall from dislodgement during washing and papermaking. The Fe3O4 particles located outside the lumen were removed by washing with tap water before the handsheet making. The factors affecting the lumen-loading of softwood bleached kraft pulp were investigated. The optimized conditions were: 29°SR beating degree of the pulp,5mg/g polyethylenimine(PEI),0.075g/1 A12(SO4)3.and 2500r/min mixing speed. The loading degree could be increased by increasing the mass ratio of Fe3O4 to pulp and the treating time. The strength properties were affected at higher loading levels due to absorption of Fe3O4 particles on fiber surface. The magnetic properties were measured using a computerized Vibrating Sample Magnetometer(VSM)for pulp samples(3-5mg).Results show that the remanent magnetization(Mr)and the coercive force(Hc)were affected by the loading levels and the particle size of Fe3O4,respectively.The Fe3O4 particles on fiber surface were examined with scanning electron microscopy.
