Optimization of Optical Properties of Polycrystalline TiO2 Nanoparticles

Nanocrystalline TiO2 has attracted much attention as whitening pigment, due to its high refractive index,non-toxicity and chemical stability.Recently, its applications have been extended to a photocatalysis paper that can effectively decompose toxins and kill pathogens.Herein,we have investigated the effect of crystalline phase of TiO2 nanoparticles to optimize the optical properties as it is coated on the glass slide substrate.Eleven different crystallite fractions of anatase to rutile were prepared for this study.Optical properties including opacity, brightness and CIE L*a*b* values were tested by Opacimeter,Brightimeter and X-Rite 530 SpectroDensitometer. It was found that a specific ratio of two different crystalline phases exists to ensure relatively higher optical properties, and consequently, the optimum value of phase fraction was 0.60 rutile:0.40 anatase with best optical properties.
